Sonic The Hedgehog Returns To Theaters For A Limited Time

Sonic the Hedgehog has raced back into select theaters for a limited time in the United States and Canada. Out of all the major releases this year so far, Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the biggest. The character is one of the most iconic in video game popular culture. Although most were skeptical when the film was originally announced, it would end up winning fans' hearts with its upbeat storyline and Jim Carrey's performance as Dr. Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog 2's release date was even confirmed last month.

It is always interesting tracking the box office for a notable film, especially in the case of Sonic the Hedgehog. Things certainly looked dour for Sonic when his original trailer was released. Opinion changed when Sonic was given a redesign, and the film debuted to positive reception. Not only that, but it surprised at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing domestic release for a film based on a video game property. Its Japanese and Chinese releases were delayed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Interestingly, Sonic the Hedgehog released in China last month as Chinese theaters began to reopen, but did poorly at the box office. Sonic's box office isn't quite done yet, as some fans are able to see the film on the big screen again.

Today, the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter announced the film has returned to select theaters for a limited in the US and Canada. Select is the keyword here, as not all theaters are opening this weekend. New Jersey movie theaters, as well as those in New York City, are remaining closed for the time being. Interested fans should check if an open movie theater near them is playing the film.

It will be interesting seeing if Sonic the Hedgehog brings in a little more money from its limited release. For those unable to go to a theater, the film is available through video-on-demand for renting and purchasing, and the physical home media releases have been available as well. Given its wide availability already, it's unknown whether people will be willing to risk their health and spend money on a ticket.

Movie theaters will likely remain a subject at the forefront for a while longer. With movie theaters starting to open, new blockbusters will start to be released. However, films that were released pre-COVID seem to be getting more attention as well. As for Sonic the Hedgehog, those wanting to go out to a theater and watch something with the family can't go wrong with the Blue Blur. Its cheerful tone might just be what people need during this time.
