Dune Trailer Online Release Date Reportedly Set For September

The Dune movie trailer will reportedly screen in theaters with Tenet starting this week and then be released online Wednesday September 9.

The long-awaited trailer to Denis Villeneuve's Dune has been reportedly confirmed for release in September. Dune is Villeneuve's first movie since Blade Runner 2049, and is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's beloved Dune novels. Previous adaptations and attempts to adapt the science fiction epic have had their own sets of troubles, and Villeneuve's Dune is now facing a global pandemic. The movie is currently set to hit theaters on December 18, with the director recently revealing he's struggling to finish his Dune movie in time for that release due to Covid-19 shutdowns.

Still, it seems Warner Bros. and Villeneuve are continuing to aim for that December release, and as such, rumors of the first Dune movie trailer have been circulating online for some time. Last month, it was rumored the Dune trailer would screen with the theatrical re-release of Inception, but that ended up not being the case. Earlier this month, Dune star Timothée Chalamet said the trailer would release before September, seemingly confirming rumors of an August debut for the teaser. Now, new information about when the Dune trailer will release has been reported.

Last week, Trailer-Track reported the Quebec Ratings Board had rated the official trailer of Dune, and today Inside the Film Room offered clarification on the teaser's release. According to Inside the Film Room's sources, a one minute and 37 second Dune trailer is screening in Canadian theaters before Tenet, which releases on August 27 in the country. Further, Inside the Film Room reports a longer Dune movie trailer will release online to the public Wednesday, September 9.

Since Tenet is also opening in theaters across Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden this weekend, it's likely the trailer will be shown before Christopher Nolan's new film in those countries as well as Canada. As for the online release, that's the week following Tenet's U.S. theatrical release date, which gives domestic movie theaters a short exclusive window before the Dune movie trailer releases to the public. This follows Warner Bros' method of marketing its movies through theater-only teasers, which began late last year with footage teasing both Tenet and Birds of Prey. As happened with Birds of Prey, it's possible the Dune footage may leak online, but Warner Bros. will no doubt be quick to take it down.

Tenet seems like the perfect movie to screen the premiere of Villeneuve's Dune trailer with. Both films are big budget spectacles directed by auteurs, and both were once promising at the box office, yet now face uncertainty due to the pandemic. If the opening of theaters goes well and moviegoers have a great time watching Tenet on the big screen, then perhaps those same filmgoers will have Dune even higher on their radar after viewing the trailer. If Tenet does not do as well as expected or hoped, then the studio will have the chance to reschedule Dune for a later date. Releasing the Dune movie trailer will most likely still be good publicity since some people are bound to catch it in theaters and the sci-fi epic's full trailer will be available online soon. Only time will tell how many people will catch the Dune trailer before Tenet in theaters, and whether Dune will be released this year at all.
