Lucifer: Why [SPOILER] Still Doesn't Know The Devil's Secret

By the end of Lucifer season 5, part 1, only one of the series' main characters is unaware that Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) is the actual Devil: Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia). Thanks to the machinations of Michael, Lucifer's identical twin brother, Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro) was shocked to see Lucifer's fearsome devil face and he now has to deal with the fact that his ex-wife, Chloe Decker's (Lauren German), partner really is the Devil. But why is Miss Lopez going to be the last series regular - not counting Chloe's young daughter Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) - to find out the truth about Lucifer, if Ella ever does?

Lucifer has never been shy about announcing that he is, indeed, the Devil. Since Lucifer doesn't lie, he never kept the truth from Chloe or anyone else in the LAPD. Understandably, most people didn't take Lucifer's boasts literally until they were shown undeniable proof but each character gradually realized Lucifer was exactly who he always said he was. The first of Lucifer's main cast to get clued into the true nature of angels and demons was Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris). After Linda saw Lucifer's devil face, she understandably had to come to terms with the fact that she was the Devil's therapist - and trading sex for sessions, a practice Dr. Martin immediately put an end to. Chloe Decker found out the truth at the end of Lucifer season 3 and she spent season 4 reconciling what it meant that she was in love with the Devil, and the detective is still coping with the realities of Lucifer in season 5.

Yet Ella Lopez remains in the dark about Lucifer, despite the fact that they have actually become close friends. The effervescent Miss Lopez joined Lucifer in season 2 and the Devil took a shine to how cheerfully yet intelligently Ella performs her job as a CSI. Ella went to Las Vegas with Lucifer in season 3, where Morningstar discovered some darker sides to Miss Lopez, like the fact that she was banned from a casino for counting cards. Ella is a devout Catholic, although she lapsed after the death of Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer), and Lucifer even accompanied Miss Lopez to church as a favor to her. Ella even immediately forgave Lucifer when he "ghosted her" after he returned to Hell (and she believes he moved to Florida). Overall, like everyone else at the LAPD who doesn't know better by now, Ella thinks Lucifer is merely a method actor who is extremely dedicated to his craft. But Ella had been rooting for Lucifer and Chloe (she coined the hashtag #DeckerStar) to get together all along.

If there's anyone in Lucifer's close circle of friends who could best handle the truth about Lucifer being the Devil, it would probably be Ella. Miss Lopez even expressed her opinion to Lucifer that the Devil "gets a bad rap", which only makes it more ironic that Ella is now going to be the last to know the truth, if and when she finds out. Meanwhile, Ella has actually been divinely touched herself; Azrael (Charlyne Yi), the angel of death and Lucifer's sister, befriended 8-year-old Ella after a car accident and Miss Lopez has thought of Azreal as her imaginary ghost friend throughout her life. Azrael even influenced Ella to love to LA so she could meet her brother Lucifer and her two favorite people could be together.

The real-life reason for Ella still not knowing Lucifer is the Devil likely boils down to the fact that it hasn't been the right time in the series' macro story yet. The order of Linda, Chloe, and Dan has been deliberately designed for maximum dramatic impact, with each character needing several episodes to adjust to the truth. Ella's time will inevitably come and odds are it will happen in Lucifer season 5, part 2 - especially now that God (Dennis Haysbert) has come to LA and Ella is His number one fan among the series' main cast. When she finally does find out about Lucifer, Ella's feelings may be hurt if that she's the last to know among her friends. But, in the fallen angel's defense, Lucifer has been telling Miss Lopez that he's the Devil all along.
