Marvel’s Eternals Movie Gets A Slight Title Change

Disney's latest release calendar confirms that Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero project is simply titled Eternals, without 'The' preceding it. Eternals will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first major superhero team-up movie in phase 4, and gathers together an all-star ensemble cast. The blockbuster, which is due to be released in February 2021, stars Angelina Jolie (Thena), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Gemma Chan (Sersi), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Selma Hayek (Ajak), Kit Harington (Dane Whitman), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Don Lee (Gilgamesh) and a number of others.

Eternals will be just the second MCU phase 4 effort to be released, following Black Widow, which is still scheduled for a theatrical release on November 6, occupying the spot previously reserved for Eternals before both movies were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Details of the plot are being kept under wraps for now, but what is known is that Eternals will follow a number of characters from a race of immortal beings of the same name, as they emerge from hiding on Earth following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Now, Disney's new release schedule has confirmed that the movie's title doesn't contain 'The'. When first announced the title was simply Eternals, but in recent times it had been referred to as 'The' Eternals, with both the listing on IMDB and the official Wikipedia page using the preposition. However, the new schedule, which confirms Eternals is still on track for its February release date, doesn't use it.

The change is small, but confirms the ethereal nature of the characters in the movie. Rather than being a designated group, like The Avengers before them, it confirms them as a species, like humans, and means that the characters in the film will be as diverse and different as any species. The upcoming movie will also feature The Deviants, a race of humanoids who, in the comics, ruled Earth before humans existed.

Eternals will be important not only for establishing never-before-seen races and characters in the MCU, but also for featuring the most diverse cast of characters. Nanjiani, who got incredibly ripped for the role of Kingo, will be the first South Asian superhero in Hollywood, while the film will also feature Marvel's first gay superhero (Phastos) and its first deaf superhero (Makkari). It's also the first Marvel film to be directed by an Asian woman, Chloe Zhao.

With the movie releasing in just a few months, and the official title of Eternals now confirmed, there should be some new marketing material on the way soon. There have been no official photos released yet, no one knows what the characters will look like, and no footage has been released. Hopefully, those will be forthcoming, along with at least a teaser or even a full-length trailer. The most likely time to release one will be when Black Widow hits theaters, so expect something in the next two or so months.
