The Mandalorian Trailer May Have Revealed Admiral Ackbar's Home Planet

The Mandalorian season 2 trailer may have revealed a live-action version of Admiral Ackbar's homeworld, Mon Cala (or Dac). Easily one of the most anticipated series releasing in the fall of 2020, The Mandalorian season 2 sees Din Djarin and Baby Yoda (aka the Child) return for another batch of adventures in the Star Wars galaxy, this time not only on the run from other bounty hunters but also from the Imperial governor Moff Gideon, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the Child.

Part of The Mandalorian season 1's story included showing fans what had become of the galaxy in the years after Return of the Jedi and the Galactic Civil War. Tatooine had changed significantly since Luke Skywalker (and the Empire) left, for instance; it was rundown and people were hardly getting by - as if it wasn't already bad before. And while a primary focus of The Mandalorian season 2 will be reuniting Baby Yoda with his kind, it seems the upcoming episodes will also explore more of the known galaxy.

The beginning of The Mandalorian season 2 trailer sees the Razor Crest heavily damaged and barely making its way to an unknown planet in the distance. Taking into account that Quarrens appear later in the trailer, with Mando and Baby Yoda then traveling by boat across an ocean, it's plausible that planet is actually Mon Cala, the homeworld of the Mon Calamari and Quarren. Both aquatic species first appeared in Return of the Jedi, but the most famous character from either one is Admiral Gial Ackbar, who fought with the Rebellion and, later, the Resistance.https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/e41526877a8bbd232c3b7cf91f9e8bd0.jpg

Although a relatively unknown planet to casual Star Wars fans, Mon Cala has always played an integral role in galactic politics. During the Clone Wars, Mon Cala devolved into a civil war between the Mon Calamari and the Quarren, whose efforts were being backed by the Separatists. So the Republic and Jedi intervened. And then, years later, Mon Cala allied with the Rebellion against the Empire, with Ackbar fighting in the Battle of Endor.

What's interesting is that, while Mon Cala has had an important - if not masked - presence in the Star Wars saga, it's unclear what role it could play in The Mandalorian season 2. Perhaps Mando and Baby Yoda only land on Mon Cala to seek refuge and repair their ship, or perhaps they heard about Luke Skywalker and are backtracking to the main Alliance worlds. Regardless of the story reason, though, longtime Star Wars fans will appreciate seeing Mon Cala in live-action for the first time - not to mention seeing the Quarrens' way of life. Mon Cala itself has rarely been explored outside of the comics, with only one major storyline in Clone Wars, and the majority of those stories have focused on the Mon Calamari; the Quarrens are somewhat a mystery by comparison.
