WandaVision Trailer Teases The MCU's House of M

In the comics, House Of M was the stunning miniseries event written by Brian Michael Bendis that saw an unhinged Scarlet Witch as the source of a fundamental change in reality that first gave everyone their wildest dreams and then led to the end of mutantkind. Or at least a desolation event that depowered the majority of the world's mutant population. As in the MCU's take on Civil War, the event was kicked off by Wanda's mental state becoming a concern for her fellow heroes and Scarlet Witch defending herself with two catastrophic reality changing events.

While it is unlikely - impossible, even - that Wanda's infamous "no more mutants" line can be redone in the MCU, given that there currently aren't any (unless you count Spider-Man and Hulk), WandaVision referencing the House Of M story arc is a great nod for comic book fans. And the subtlety with which it's delivered suggests that WandaVision will be as playful as the marketing has so far suggested.

At one point in the trailer, Wanda is shown using her powers to poor a bottle of "Maison du Mépris" wine, whose neck label also includes a the symbol of an "M" in a circle, which is a simplified version of the House of M logo from Marvel Comics. The name of the wine suggests narrative parallels with House Of M too, since "Mépris" is French for contempt and "Maison du" translated to "House of." Given that Scarlet Witch's contempt for the combined Avengers/X-Men plot to kill her (as suggested by Wolverine) is what leads to her warping reality and creating a new world, it's rather a fitting name.

Clearly, lots of the elements would need to be changed to make House of M work in the MCU, but the general story pillars could be used. Scarlet Witch could change reality to reflect her dreams (and she could even do the same for her fellow Avengers), while SWORD would take over from the Avengers and X-Men as the force looking to control Wanda's powers before they irreversibly alter all of reality. And in this case, the trigger event - which was the death of Wanda's children in the comics - could be Vision's death, building on everything Wanda went through previously. While it wouldn't be a pure adaptation, Marvel Studios don't often stick to the comics particularly closely and anything resembling an adaptation of House of M at all would make WandaVision essential viewing for MCU fans.
