LA's Finest, a Bad Boys spinoff that stared Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union as Nancy McKenna and Syd Burnett, has been cancelled after two seasons.
LA's Finest has been canceled after only a two-season run. The fast-paced TV series is a spinoff of the Bad Boys franchise, which follows detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). However, LA's Finest never quite achieved the popularity of the Bad Boys films; despite the star power of leads Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, the series has received lukewarm reviews at best.
Union portrays Syd Burnett, Marcus' sister and a police detective who joins the Los Angeles Police Department. Alba, on the other hand, stars as Nancy McKenna, Syd's new partner who has a dark past as a career criminal. Together, the two solve crimes while embarking on a series of misadventures across the greater LA Metropolitan area.
Variety reports that LA's Finest has been canceled after just two seasons. The news comes right after Fox acquired broadcast rights to the series and started airing season 1 in September. That being said, Spectrum Originals made the ultimate decision to pull the plug, despite just releasing season 2 of LA's Finest.
While news of LA's Finest cancellation is disappointing to some fans, perhaps cast and crew members already saw the writing on the wall. Although season 2 of LA's Finest was supposed to start airing in June 2020, the season premiere was delayed until a September release, when all 13 episodes were released simultaneously. The delay was likely made due to the horrific acts of police brutality during the summer that sparked nationwide protests. Most cops on LA's Finest are shown as kind, heroic, and brave, rather than portraying a nuanced view of police work in America. Although there's been no official word from Spectrum about the reason behind the show's cancellation, the police brutality protests may have played a hand in the ultimate cancellation decision.
Despite LA's Finest coming to an end, fans might have another chance to see Alba and Union in action. More specifically, Sony Pictures has confirmed that it's developing Bad Boys 4. Considering Bad Boys for Life ended with the realization that Armando Armas (Jacob Scipio) is Mike's son, Bad Boys 4 may focus on a team-up between Armando, Mike, and Marcus. That being said, much of the storyline still seems to be in development, meaning this would be the perfect opportunity for Syd and McKenna to make a cameo. Although nothing has been confirmed regarding Syd and McKenna's future in the franchise (yet!), many fans hope to see the duo again soon.
