The trailer for His Dark Materials season 2 is here, and it’s full of animals, airships, and promises of war. The series, an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s award-winning fantasy trilogy of the same name, premiered on HBO late last year to a warm critical and fan reception. It was particularly praised for its all-star cast and stellar visual effects. The second season will adapt Pullman’s second book, The Subtle Knife.
The season 2 trailer shows Dafne Keen’s Lyra Belacqua and Amir Wilson’s Will Parry exploring the new world Lyra entered at the end of season 1. Lin Manuel-Miranda and Andrew Scott both return and feature prominently in the trailer as Lee Scoresby and Colonel John Parry, alongside members of the tyrannical Magisterium. The trailer also reveals the titular Subtle Knife – a tool that can cut holes between the worlds. There’s plenty of aeronautical action, gorgeous fantasy landscapes, mystery, intrigue, and magical beasts along the way. You can watch the whole trailer below.
The first season received a generally positive response, so it should be interesting to see how the show expands and develops in the coming episodes. At HBO keeps gaining traction with His Dark Materials, Netflix hopes to capture a similar level of success with their planned adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia – a fellow children’s fantasy series that Pullman’s books are largely in response to. For fans of the genre, that’s a lot of potentially great content on the way. His Dark Materials season 2 premieres on HBO on November 16.
