Netflix released a teaser trailer for season 4 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which will be the last 8 episodes, as well as a premiere date.
The Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina finally released a teaser trailer revealing it returns to the streaming service on December 31, 2020. The TV show is based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman, popularized through both the comic book series Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the late 90s TV show of the same name. While following the same characters, Chilling Adventures is derived from a spinoff comic book series published by the horror imprint of Archie Comics. It’s a much darker tale of Sabrina’s life as a witch and stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina, along with Ross Lynch, Jaz Sinclair, and Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto as Sabrina’s aunts.
Chilling Adventures initially premiered in 2018 to positive reviews. In contrast to Sabrina the Teenage Witch's upbeat content, the Netflix series presents witches as Satan-worshipping creatures of darkness. As a half-witch-half-mortal, Sabrina is torn between her light and dark sides, ultimately bringing her high school friends into the fray of her coven. Additionally, Sabrina and her friends deal with more mature themes than the earlier TV series, like sexuality, misogyny, and transphobia. The last set of episodes ended in a mind-bending time loop, creating two versions of Sabrina—one to live out her teenage mortal existence, and the other to rule hell alongside her father, Lucifer.
In July 2020, Netflix shared that Chilling Adventures would be canceled, with the final eight episodes (part 4) releasing in late 2020. After making fans wait months for another shred of news, Netflix finally released the first teaser trailer for this final set of episodes, sharing that they will premiere on the last day of 2020. Part 4 will find Sabrina fighting The Eldritch Terrors, a new threat leading up to the End of All Things. On a lighter note, Sabrina will also settle her romantic troubles with Nick, her warlock ex-boyfriend.
The teaser trailer is full of spooks and terror, but it’s difficult to tell the storyline's specifics. It’s clear that most of the beloved characters are returning, including Sabrina’s friends and family, her Academy of the Unseen Arts nemesis, Prudence, and her father, Satan himself. One missing enemy is Father Blackwood, the ex-leader of the Spellman’s coven and a constant danger to Sabrina. The video also gives a glimpse of the two Sabrinas coming together, hinting that Sabrina’s diverging identities will be an integral element in part 4.
Unfortunately, with the Sabrina cancellation, the show will no longer be able to have its planned crossover with Riverdale. Instead, series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa claimed that season 5 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina—including the crossover—will take place in comic book form. Although that won't pack quite the same punch as the TV series, it'll have to do for fans who are hungry for more Sabrina.
