The CW has announced Batwoman season 2 will premiere on January 17, 2021, introducing Javicia Leslie's take on the character. Leslie is set to debut in the Arrowverse (now dubbed the CWverse by the network) as a new character, Ryan Wilder, created specifically for Batwoman. Leslie was cast as the new Batwoman following Ruby Rose's exit, amidst some controversy, in May. It was decided not to recast Rose, but rather give the new Batwoman lead a fresh start, and have the cowl passed on to an entirely new character, effectively replacing Kate Kane.

Wilder has since become part of official DC comics canon, being introduced in the latest issue of Batgirl. As for how Leslie's character takes on the mantle of Batwoman in season 2, that is a detail which is unknown at this point. The only piece of confirmed information is Kate Kane won't be killed off, so Rose's exit will likely be explained as part of season 2, episode 1. Besides the change of main character, Batwoman season 2 is also expected to introduce some other new characters, including classic DC villain Victor Zsasz (Alex Worf).

Now, The CW has officially announced Batwoman will return to TV screens on January 17, 2021. The announcement comes on the same day as three other Arrowverse premiere dates, including The Flash and Superman & Lois. The news was made via the official Batwoman account on Twitter, and teases the fact Ryan Wilder is introduced by saying "Gotham has a new hero." You can see the announcement tweet below:

The release date is later than it would normally have been, a situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Besides the start of filming being delayed, Batwoman also suffered a filming shutdown due to COVID testing delays, which would have also affected the release schedule. However, now fans know when to expect season 2 to arrive. It's also, as a result, the date audiences will see the on-screen debut of Ryan Wilder, as portrayed by Leslie. Anticipation for the new character is high, and the season 2 debut is likely to see good viewing numbers as a result.

Very little has been seen of Leslie in character as either Wilder or Batwoman, besides two promotional images released this week, revealing what Leslie looks like in the new Batwoman batsuit. Those two images, and now the release date, hint The CW is gearing up to release the first official footage of Leslie in action, and perhaps a small teaser of what to expect from Batwoman season 2. That should come sooner rather than later, giving audiences an idea of what's coming in 2021.
