Umbrella Academy Officially Renewed For Season 3 At Netflix

Netflix's smash hit superhero show The Umbrella Academy, which follows the Hargreeves family, has finally officially been renewed for season 3.

Netflix's smash hit superhero show The Umbrella Academy, which follows the Hargreeves family, has finally officially been renewed for season 3. The show, based on the comic books of the same name written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrated by Brazilian comic book artist Gabriel Bá, debuted on the streaming giant in early 2019 and was an instant success. It follows a group of seven children all born under mysterious circumstances on the same day, along with 36 other children.

Adopted by the eccentric, and perhaps alien in origin, billionaire Reginald Hargreeves, the children each have unique superpowers and grow up as a superhero team for hire. Season 1 covered the now separate Hargreeves family members as adults reuniting for the funeral of their adoptive father. They also sought to uncover the mystery behind his death. Season 2 sent the group back in time to 1960s Dallas, where they get involved in the assassination of JFK and found out more about Reginald Hargreeves' murky past. Season 2 was an even bigger success and was quickly the most streamed show in the USA, according to Neilsen's ratings.

Now, Netflix confirms The Umbrella Academy has been officially renewed for season 3. Variey reports the new season will once again consist of 10 hour-long episodes, and production is expected to kick off in Toronto in February 2021. The core cast, consisting of  Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Colm Feore and Ritu Arya are all set to reprise their roles in season 3, while showrunner Steve Blackman remains in place to take charge of things. You can see Netflix's tweet announcing season 3 below:

The filming date lines up with a previous report, released before Netflix had made the announcement about the renewal, which said The Umbrella Academy season 3 would begin shooting in February 2021. The news, while not at all surprising given the massive success of the show, will make fans happy, confirming as it does that the tale of the Hargreeves children will continue. There are many story lines from the original comics to draw on, though it is assumed season 3 will focus on the Sparrow Academy, introduced in the closing scene of season 2.

The season 2 finale made it clear that by travelling through time the Hargreeves have altered the present, making them get replaced by another group of children under the care of Sir Reginald. Just how that revelation will play out is unclear, but there is great potential for conflict and confusion due to the new team. Hopefully, The Umbrella Academy is able to return to the intriguing heights of season 1 with season 3, and satisfyingly answer a number of questions fans still have following the end of season 2.
