Joe Russo says the aim is to get the script for Extraction 2 done in time to start shooting the Netflix sequel sometime in 2021. The movie will continue the story of Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary who, in Extraction is tasked with extracting Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) from the clutches of his father's rival. Directed by long-time stuntman Sam Hargrave, and produced by the Russo brothers, Extraction was a massive hit for Netflix, becoming the streaming service's biggest original movie debut, and was quickly named its biggest hit ever.

Despite resonating with audiences in a big way, the original received mixed reviews from critics, with the action sequences getting praise, but the cliched plot getting criticized. Those reviews did little to dampen enthusiasm for the movie, though, and fans are eagerly anticipating the sequel, if only to find out what happens to Rake after his fate is left in question at the end of the movie. While there has been no official word on a plot, or which cast members will return, Extraction's final scene made it clear a sequel would involve Ovi and Rake, with the former seemingly in danger of being abducted once more.

Now, in an interview with Comicbook.com about the Russo brothers' latest Netflix movie Mosul, Joe Russo has confirmed the sequel to Extraction is aiming to shoot next year. He says the script is still a work in progress, but he's hoping it will be done in time for a 2021 shoot. He adds that he, Hemsworth and Netflix are all incredibly keen to get going on the sequel, but doesn't mention Hargraves' involvement. You can see his thoughts below:

Yeah we're still working on two. We're in the script phase right now but we're hoping to shoot that sometime next year. And then you know, say I'm super excited, Hemsworth's super excited, Netflix is excited so it's really just a function of getting the script done.

The news isn't surprising, given how successful Extraction turned out to be for Netflix. The streaming service rarely releases action movies which resonate so firmly with a wide range of audiences and so would have been incredibly keen to get the sequel into production. They will be hoping the sequel is just as successful as the first, setting the series up for a potential trilogy, and standing alongside the likes of Charlize Theron's The Old Guard, which is also getting a sequel, as a new Netflix franchise.

Despite Russo not mentioning him, one assumes Hargrave, who made his directorial debut with Extraction, would be keen to return to helm Extraction 2. If he does, it would reunite the full creative team from the original, and hopefully guarantee a movie of similar quality. While Extraction is far from perfect, it was a good action movie and set the tone for Netflix's future action offerings, and a sequel which lives up to the original would be a welcome addition to the streaming service's library. Given the 2021 filming date, expect Extraction 2 to get a release some time in 2022.
