The Orville season 3 has (finally) officially resumed production after being delayed back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Orville season 3 officially resumes production after a lengthy delay. Seth MacFarlene's sci-fi comedy first premiered in 2017, offering something that was a cross between a Star Trek parody and homage. At first, The Orville was met with negative reviews from critics, but it soon improved its quality and found an audience that allowed it to be renewed for a second and third season. MacFarlene stars as the relatively inexperienced captain of a mid-level exploratory ship as he embarks on several missions with his crew, which includes his ex-wife (Adrienne Palicki). While The Orville season 2 ended back in spring 2019, season 3 has been slow to come.
Production on The Orville season 3 began last year, putting the show on track for a fall 2020 premiere. However, the COVID-19 pandemic suspended work in March of this year. Since then, The Orville has remained stalled, leaving fans with no idea as to when they can expect season 3 to arrive. Signs of progress came in early November, when reports emerged suggesting The Orville would start up filming this month. Now, it looks like that timeline has managed to hold firm.
On social media, The Orville confirmed production on season 3 resumed on Friday. The announcement came with a picture of a slate, which reveals MacFarlene is directing the episode they are currently working on. He previously helmed three episodes in season 2, and it remains to be seen if he'll step up for any more. Check out the full post down below.
Previous reports indicated The Orville season 3 will take an additional five to six months to film, meaning fans likely shouldn't expect to see it premiere until late 2021 at the earliest. That The Orville was able to begin again in the first week of December as planned means they have their COVID protocols in place and hopefully won't suffer any further shutdowns. Of course, these days it's hard to say for sure whether they will be able to avoid them; recent months have seen numerous shows and movies start back up, only to stop again due to positive cases. The Orville is expected to take a break around the holidays before moving forward with the rest of the season.
For season 3, The Orville will premiere on Hulu, which could result in some changes to the show's content. There could be more profanity or mature situations, though it remains to be seen if MacFarlene seizes that opportunity. The production start is a positive sign for this series, particularly since season 2 ended so long ago. Only time will tell if The Orville will make it to the end of season 3 without any further issues.
