Lucifer season 6 has cast Deadpool actress Brianna Hildebrand as a rebellious angel who looks up to the titular Devil. Lucifer is one of those fan favorite shows that has managed to evade cancellation multiple times over the years. Once part of Fox's lineup, the series was canceled after three seasons. However, fan interest in the show led Netflix to pick it up. The plan was for Lucifer season 5 to be the last, but surprise news arrived months ago when Netflix confirmed season 6 is on the way.
Starring Tom Ellis in the title role, Lucifer follows the Devil after he leaves his domain of Hell behind for a lengthy vacation in Los Angeles. While also running a nightclub, Lucifer assists the LAPD with various cases after crossing paths with Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). The first half of Lucifer season 5, which dropped on Netflix in August, saw Lucifer return to Hell to fulfill his duties, though the arrival of his twin brother Michael on Earth drew him back. The half-season concluded with a major appearance: God (Dennis Haysbert), Lucifer's estranged father.
With production on Lucifer season 6 underway, some new additions to the cast have been announced. Per EW, Hildebrand (best known as Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the Deadpool franchise) and Star Trek: Picard alum Merrin Dungey have joined Lucifer for its final season. Hildebrand will play Rory, a "rebellious, angsty, and ready-to-start-some-trouble angel." She dreams of following in Lucifer's wayward footsteps, but she soon realizes he isn't "the devilish big bro she hoped he’d be." As for Dungey, she will play Sonya, a "no-nonsense uniform cop who forms an unlikely bond with Amenadiel [DB Woodside]."
Both Hildebrand and Dungey's characters look to shake up Lucifer in exciting ways. Hildebrand's Rory could provide an excellent opportunity to examine how much Lucifer has changed over the course of the series. Season 1 Lucifer might have been the person Rory aspires to be, but season 6 Lucifer is a much different person. How this will affect Rory's dreams remains to be seen, but the fallout could be chaotic. As for Sonya, Lucifer's brother Amenadiel has been worried about his son Charlie, and Dungey's character could help him through his uncertainty.
Before both women turn up, though, Lucifer has to complete season 5. Netflix split the penultimate season up into two eight-episode portions, and season 5B has yet to receive a premiere date. Production was briefly disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, but as episodes were finally wrapped in October, the rest of the season could arrive in the first half of 2021. Lucifer season 5B could provide some major clues about where season 6 will go, and could even set up the arrivals of Rory and Sonya. Fans will just have to wait and see what happens whenever Lucifer returns.
