Chrissy Teigen teases John Legend over the 2017 La La Land debacle, where his film was mistakenly crowned the Best Picture winner.
Chrissy Teigen took to Twitter to tease husband John Legend about the infamous La La Land and Moonlight mix up at the 2017 Oscars. Legend starred in La La Land as Keith, a successful guitarist and vocalist who invites Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) to join his jazz fusion band. Legend also co-wrote and recorded the song "Start a Fire" for the La La Land soundtrack.
La La Land fared well at the Oscars, snagging the awards for Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Original Score (Justin Hurwitz), Best Cinematography (Linus Sandgren), and Best Production Design (David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco). But Moonlight dashed La La Land's hopes for Best Picture in a rather chaotic fashion. There was a mix up with the winner envelopes, which led presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to erroneously announce La La Land as the winner. The cast and crew of La La Land took the stage only to find out Moonlight was the actual Best Picture winner. The internet went into a frenzy, memes abounded, and it went down in history as one of the most memorable Oscar ceremonies to date.
But although the incident occurred nearly four years ago, Chrissy Teigen isn't quite ready to let John Legend live it down. Teigen tweeted, "laughing about when john thought he won the Oscar for best picture lmao”. Fans reacted hysterically in the comments and even Moonlight director Barry Jenkins joined in on the fun. This certainly isn't the first time Teigen publicly trolled Legend. In fact, the couple is well known for their playful mockery and social media banter. Teigen has previously posted photos of Legend naked in the shower, made fun of his honorary degrees on Instagram, and jokingly claimed credit for his song "All of Me". Legend always seems to take the teasing in stride, which likely only encourages Teigen. But Legend must not be too heartbroken over the La La Land Best Picture debacle, otherwise Teigen wouldn't have reopened the wound.
It's good to see that the couple is still able to laugh at one another even after an extremely difficult year filled with their own personal challenges. Their banter gives people a reason to smile and provides a source of entertainment while everyone is trapped at home. There are few certainties regarding 2021, but at least Chrissy Teigen is starting it off strong by once again using her public platform to make fun of John Legend. Something is right in the world.
