Promising Young Woman, the darkly comedic revenge thriller starring Carey Mulligan, will be available for on-demand rental starting next week.
Promising Young Woman finally has its on-demand release date set for the end of next week. The film stars Carey Mulligan in a darkly comedic revenge thriller produced by Margot Robbie’s production company Luckychap. Mulligan plays Cassie, a cunning former medical student seeking to avenge her friend's rape. Promising Young Woman marks the feature directorial debut of Killing Eve writer Emerald Fennell, who also wrote the screenplay. Both the film and Mulligan have received rave reviews and are already garnering Oscar buzz.
Focus Features announced that the film will be available on-demand starting next Friday, January 15th via digital content platforms such as Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu and GooglePlay. Viewers will have access to the rental for 48 hours and the film won’t be streaming anywhere for free at this time. Promising Young Woman first premiered at Sundance last year, and was released in theaters on December 25th, though it was originally intended for an April release but was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Though most reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, Mulligan recently fired back at a Variety reviewer who critiqued her appearance in the film. The critic insinuated that Robbie may have been a better aesthetic fit for the part, to which Mulligan aptly responded that she couldn’t believe they were making such a trivial comment, especially in relation to this daring female-driven narrative. Variety has since apologized for the misguided and offensive commentary.
Promising Young Woman's synopsis reads as follows: Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman... until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.
