The long-rumored Wonka prequel movie appears to be moving into development, with Warner Bros. revealing a planned release date for 2023.
The long-rumored Wonka movie, a prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, is set to release in 2023. The prequel tells the origin story of the famous chocolate factory owner. While details about the movie are sparse, Wonka is likely to become a very anticipated film over the next couple of years.
According to a release from Warner Bros., Wonka will be coming on March 17, 2023. The plot will involve "a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory." It's an origin story left mostly unexplored in the original movie, although it is incorporated into Johnny Depp's portrayal in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
A couple of members of the production team for Wonka were also confirmed. Paul King, best known for directing the Paddington films, will helm this movie. Additionally, David Heyman will serve as a producer; he produced all of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies and worked with King on Paddington.
There is a revived interest in Willy Wonka, with Taika Waititi also working on multiple animated shows centered on the character and his universe. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of the most beloved films of all-time, while Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also received praise. It will be interesting to see how Wonka fits into the triumvirate when it arrives in 2023.
