A Spanish-language Bird Box spinoff movie is in development at Netflix. A few years ago, Netflix saw Bird Box become one of their more popular releases. Based on the novel by Josh Malerman, the movie starred Sandra Bullock as a mother trying to keep her kids safe in a deadly world filled with blindfolds. According to Nielsen, more than 26 million people streamed Bird Box during its first week of release, but Netflix claimed 45 million people watched the thriller.

Due to Bird Box's success, there have long been talks about how the franchise could continue. Director Susanne Bier is open to making a sequel, and it was reported in 2020 that Bird Box 2 was in development at Netflix. That news came from author Josh Malerman on the heels of him releasing a sequel book, Malorie. A true sequel would require Sandra Bullock to return, and so far, there is no word on whether or not that will happen. Instead of waiting for Bird Box 2 to take shape, Netflix is prioritizing a Bird Box spinoff instead.

According to THR, Netflix is developing a Bird Box spinoff that will be set in Spain. The Spanish-language spinoff will be written and directed by Spanish-born filmmakers Alex and David Pastor. They are best known for writing Self/less and most recently directed the Netflix thriller The Occupant. No plot details have been revealed beyond the spinoff plan to show what the post-apocalyptic lifestyle was like in another part of the world. Netflix is reportedly fast-tracking the Bird Box spinoff movie with the goal of production beginning by the end of the year.

The decision to greenlight a Bird Box spinoff is the latest attempt by Netflix to create a home-grown franchise. They have plans for Extraction, Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, and many more to become sprawling franchises and cinematic universes. Bird Box is now on track to join that list with the anthology-style approach to this terrifying world. This could give Netflix a chance to make a loosely connected franchise and reveal some answers about the Bird Box world.

With Netflix fast-tracking the Bird Box spinoff, it shouldn't be too long before more details arrive. After getting Sandra Bullock to star in the original, Netflix could search for prominent Spanish stars to lead the spinoff, such as Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, or Salma Hayek. It'll also be intriguing to see what Netflix ultimately titles the film, as it would make sense for them to keep Bird Box in the title for brand awareness. Something as simple as Bird Box: Spain would mark the movie as a spinoff set in a new country and establish a way for Netflix to follow a similar path to create other spinoffs set in different parts of the world.
