Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Universe on Netflix Has a Zombie Bible
Zack Snyder's burgeoning Army of the Dead universe over at Netflix has a complete zombie bible to keep everything straight. After spending years with DC superheroes, Snyder will return to where his directing career began with Army of the Dead, his first Netflix movie. His directorial debut was 2004's Dawn of the Dead remake. Anticipation is high for Snyder's latest zombie flick, which looks to combine the horror genre with a heist set-up. After a zombie outbreak takes over Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries led by Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) venture into the city to steal the $200 million tucked away underneath a casino.
Army of the Dead premieres on Netflix next month, but it is already leading to a fully-fledged franchise. A prequel movie titled Army of Thieves has already completed production, though it remains to be seen when it will be released. It was directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, one of the stars of Army of the Dead, and it will center on his character Ludwig Dieter in the early days of the outbreak. Additionally, an animated prequel series is in development and is also without a release date.
With so many projects on the way, one hopes Snyder has a plan for everything. Luckily, he has established some kind of guide along with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten. During a Q&A session with Netflix, Snyder was asked if there is a central mythology in place for this universe. "Oh, yeah," he responded before elaborating, "Shay and I have it worked out. There's definitely a bible. And now after having made the animated series, I think it’s definitely scaled appropriately."
The creation of a bible will ensure certain details remain the same between all the Army of the Dead projects, which should make for a more cohesive viewing experience. Additionally, it also hints there could be even more Army of the Dead-related projects on the way. Now that Snyder and Hatten have put serious thought into the universe, there are bound to be additional story opportunities. It certainly sounds like Snyder is interested in making more projects in this world.
First, though, Army of the Dead has to arrive. The film is slated to premiere on Netflix in just about a month, so fans still sadly have a few more weeks left to wait. Luckily, recent days have seen an influx in new details about the film, from a longer Army of the Dead trailer to further information about the outbreak and how it impacts humans and animals alike. The latter example really seems to emphasize just how much thought Snyder and Hatten put into Army of the Dead, and hopefully that will continue to come through in the movie itself.
