Godzilla vs. Kong's release comes at an interesting point in cinema history. Over the last year, the outlook on the theatrical experience appeared gloomy. However, box office optimism returned thanks to the two biggest monsters in popular culture. Godzilla vs. Kong was the fastest movie in the pandemic era to reach $200 million, a feat accomplished after just 12 days. It's not hard to see why the film has been successful. It has seen plenty of positive reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has the highest Audience Score of any MonsterVerse movie to date, with a 91%. The action is unparalleled, delivering the brawls audiences want without the usage of stormy weather or cutaways. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the climax featured an unforgettable tag team against Mechagodzilla.
The special features sound like they will be quite insightful into the making of the movie. Based on the titles, each of the film's main action sequences will delved into. It should also be interesting seeing what insights director Adam Wingard will give during the film's commentary. However, many fans will likely be disappointed at what appears to be a lack of deleted scenes. Wingard said there was enough footage for a 5-hour version of the movie, although he stated no interest in any kind of director's cut. It's a shame the cut footage may never see the light of day.
Although Godzilla vs. Kong's brisk pace certainly worked to keep the movie engaging, more scenes developing the human characters could have been beneficial. Although not confirmed to have any scenes removed, the character of Ren Serizawa is probably the biggest example of needing character development. Ren's relationship to one of the MonsterVerse's most important characters is never brought up in the story. The one common criticism of Godzilla vs. Kong is its underdeveloped human characters. Thankfully, the impressive action and the monsters as characters themselves make up for anything negative.
