Funimation Adds 80s Anime Including Little Nemo & God Mazinger

A trio of classic 80s anime have made their way to the Funimation streaming service.Starting today, May 23, the full anime television series of God Mazinger and Space Adventure Cobra, as well as the anime film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, will be available on the streamer. The three new entries further expand Funimation’s iconic anime offerings which include Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z, and Astro Boy.

God Mazinger is an anime, manga, and novel series created by artist Go Nagai. The 23-episode anime originally aired in Japan in April 1984. It was directed by Yoshio Hayakawa and written by Hiroyuki Onodera. The manga was written and illustrated by Go Nagai. While it follows a similar plot thread to the anime, it differs in a number of ways including its mature tone and a different ending.

The Space Adventure Cobra anime is based on the Cobra manga written and illustrated by Buichi Terasawa. It was serialized in Shuesha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from November 1978 to November 1984. In 1982, it was adapted into an anime film that was directed by Osamu Dezaki. The Space Adventure Cobra television show debuted soon after with Dezaki still in the director’s chair. All 31 episodes of the show are up on Funimation.

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland premiered in Japan in 1989. While it was critically received well, it was considered a flop. The English dub was released in the United States in 1992. However, 11 minutes of the film were cut so it would receive a G rating. The film is directed by Masami Hata and William Hurtz. It is based on the comic strip of the same name by Winsor McCay.
