The Conjuring 3 Scares A Quiet Place Part II From Atop the Box Office: See Top 10 This Week
Audiences clearly enjoyed being scared. After dropping a massive $57 million on John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place II last weekend, moviegoers flocked to see New Line’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which (per Deadline) grossed a stellar $24 million from 3,102 theaters, enough to claim the top spot at the domestic box office; and tout the largest opening for an R-rated film during the pandemic.
Internationally, the horror sequel scared up $26.8 million from 43 territories, bringing its global cume to $57.1 million. That’s mighty impressive for an R-rated film that simultaneously premiered on HBO Max (and is still dealing with COVID-19).
For comparison’s sake, the original Conjuring opened to $42 million in 2013 en route to $320 million worldwide, while the 2016 sequel debuted to $40 million and totaled $322 million.
As for A Quiet Place, the thriller took in $19.5 million in Week 2 (-59%) bringing its domestic total to $88.6 million. Overseas, the alien-invasion flick collected $19.2 million which bumps its worldwide total to a massive $138 million.
Disney’s Cruella continued to perform well in its third weekend, racking up $11.2M domestically for a $43.6M total, down 48%. Internationally, the prequel about famed Disney villain Cruella De Vil dropped just 7% and drew $18.6M in ticket sales from 36 territories, bringing the film’s worldwide gross to $87.1M. Cruella is currently available to Disney+ subscribers for $30.
Theo only other new release was the animated adventure Spirit Untamed which rode off with $6.2M from 3,102 theaters.
Finally, the Justin Lin-directed action sequel F9 crossed the $250 million mark, despite dropping mighty quickly after its ginormous debut. Last weekend saw the pic dip a hefty 81%, while Week 3 resulted in a 57% drop. Don’t cry too hard for the action flick, as it’s expected to detonate in the U.S. when it releases June 25.
Oh, and one last bit of news: Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway earned another $4 million from 14 markets to bring its total to $45.8 million. Keep in mind, the family flick opens in China and North America this Friday.
