HBO & BBC One’s His Dark Materials Season 3 Begins Production

HBO and BBC One have announced that production on the upcoming third and final season of their fantasy drama His Dark Materials has finally begun in the UK after nearly six months since it wrapped up its second season. In addition, the official cast for next season has also been confirmed including returning and new characters who will be joining lead stars Dafne Keen’s Lyra and Amir Wilson’s Will.

The seven new cast members are Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Suicide Squad) as Commander Ogunwe; Jamie Ward (Tyrant) as Father Gomez; Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Zack Snyder’s Justice League) as rebel angel Baltamos; Simon Harrison (No Man’s Land) as rebel angel Baruch; Chipo Chung (Into the Badlands) as rebel angel Xaphania; and Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe as Ama.

Based on Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy novel series, His Dark Materials centers around a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. The final season will see Will, the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra, the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other.

Season 3 will feature returning cast members including Dafne Keen, Amir Wilson, Ruth Wilson, Simone Kirby, Will Keen, Jade Anouka, Ruta Gedminstas, and James McAvoy. It will be directed by Armit Gupta, Charles Martin, and Weronika Tofilska.

The last season featured Lyra going into a strange and mysterious abandoned city where she meets Will, a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.

His Dark Materials is produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema for BBC One and HBO. Executive producers are Dan McCulloch, Jane Tranter, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, Philip Pullman, Jack Thorne, Tom Hooper, Deborah Forte, Toby Emmerich, Carolyn Blackwood, and Ben Irving.
