Director Talks Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard Sequel Plans, Deleted Scenes

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard recently released in theaters and signaled the return of blockbusters to movie theaters after the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The follow-up to The Hitman’s Bodyguard is better than its predecessor in nearly every way, so could we see Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek return for a third time in a Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard sequel?

“Certainly the ending of this film lends itself to more suffering for Michael Bryce,” said director Patrick Hughes to ComingSoon. “So that can continue for eternity because I certainly love watching Ryan suffer. If there’s potential to do it further, then we certainly are going to pursue that.”

Hughes also discussed the role of Morgan Freeman, who winds up stealing the second half of the film as Michael Bryce’s (adoptive) father. For Hughes, it was an unbelievable moment getting the legendary actor on-set, and the scene where the relationship is revealed sticks out as a particularly hilarious moment in the movie.

“Yeah, it was great,” said Hughes. “It was like, I really had to pinch myself that day. The challenge I have is I laugh a lot when I’m filming stuff, and I’ve ruined takes, so they literally have to move my monitor. Sometimes they move me outside of the studio door in the middle of winter in London and it’s snowing. I’m not kidding you. Like they have to move me away because I’ve got the big laugh. I’m quite loud in case you haven’t worked that out. It is one of the challenging aspects certainly of this franchise and of this genre.

“I mean, [Morgan] ‘s an icon. It’s a bloody honor and a privilege. It was funny. Someone asked me the other day, ‘How many stars you work with?’ and I was like, ‘Dude, I’ve lost count.’ Then I’m just like standing on set with my Morgan Freeman, and you’re just like God, you think of all the films he’s done. Like it’s just insane. It really is insane. One thing I realized when we were making the sequel, I was like, when you think of like all these people that are on set, the combined titles that were all these people have been involved in was like over 2000 movies. I was like, this is what a wealth of talent and experience to tap into.

“That’s certainly one thing that I love about working with the dynamic sort of range of different actors is. It’s like a film school for me. I’m asking them a million questions about it. Certain movies they’re in. I was like, “How did they do this? How did they do that?” So it’s just a wonderful way to learn and grow your wisdom. Because I just feel like as a director, there’s not a day where I don’t rock up on set and I’m learning every day.”

Hughes also revealed that fans might also get an extended cut of the film once the Blu-ray gets released as there were a ton of deleted scenes.

“Dude, there’s another whole movie that didn’t make it into the final product,” Hughes told ComingSoon. “Yes, there’s so many alternate takes. There’s a lot of swearing we had to cut cause it was just how much is too much. Then there’s a bunch of deleted scenes. So I think the Blu-ray is going to be special. I think we might even do an extended cut. So we’ll have a look.”
