F9 Crosses $100 Million Domestically, Leads Box Office

As expected, F9: The Fast Saga led the Fourth of July box office with $22.86 million over the 3-day weekend, down 67% from its opening frame. https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/37ac2722b98c5aad0e46b2385a076c62.jpgTaking Monday (a holiday for most) into account, the film is expected to raise its domestic total to $123.2 million — the fastest pic to reach that number during the pandemic, per Deadline. The Justin Lin directed feature earned $2.2 million from IMAX locations, bringing that particular domestic number to $9.1 million.

Not too shabby.

Elsewhere, Boss Baby: Family Business collected $16.04 million over three days and $20.03M million over four days. The film was simultaneously released on the Peacock streaming platform. It should be noted that Boss Baby 2’s opening was down 66% from the original’s $50 million, which is pretty steep even for a younger-skewing animated sequel. Universal will have to hope this one has legs similar to the original, which collected $175 million domestically and $527 million worldwide back in 2017.

Forever Purge, the latest sequel in the long-running Purge franchise, managed $12 million over the 3-day period and $15.6 million over its first four days from 3,051 theaters. While A24’s Zola, the only other new release on the Top 10, posted $2.4 million over its first six days of release.

Overall, the box office was down considerably from Memorial Day weekend’s massive $87 million haul, and (as expected) a far cry from the last time July 4th fell on a Sunday when Twilight Saga: Eclipse earned $83.6 million alone in 2010. Still, each of the top 10 films grossed over a million dollars, so that’s something. With potential blockbusters like Black Widow on the horizon, one can only expect good news going forward.
