Shazam! Fury of the Gods: Release date, cast, villain and plot

DC Comics threw us a curveball superhero movie in 2019 with the comedy-action 'Shazam!', with reviews of the first movie so positive that the studio had no choice but to commission the sequel. That sequel will be coming out in 2023 and is titled 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods'.

The plot of the 'Shazam!' sequel

Fans truly loved the first 'Shazam!' movie. Set in Philadelphia, 14-year-old foster child Billy Batson, played by Asher Angel, is constantly running away from foster homes until he finds himself in one alongside superhero enthusiast Freddy Freeman, played by Jack Dylan Grazer. Batson one day finds himself transported to the Rock of Eternity, where he meets a wizard who chooses Batson to be his new champion, giving him all his powers whenever he says the name 'Shazam'.

Four years later, the superhero will make his return in 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods'. The sequel is due to follow the hero and his now superpowered foster family as they protect the world from the threats of the wizarding world.

A teaser trailer has even been released, to give fans a brief look at what to expect from the 'Shazam!' sequel.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, the film will see Asher Angel and Zachary Levi reprise their protagonist roles.

As the main cast returns, a whole host of new characters are due to make appearances. The superheroes will find themselves against the daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren (Hespera), Lucy Liu (Kalypso) and Rachel Zegler (undisclosed role).

While the plot for the film remains firmly under lock and key, filming is reported to be finished, following the delay they suffered back in October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Provided they are not required to do any reshoots and provided that the project doesn't get delayed any further, the sequel should be released on June 2, 2023.

The initial release date was supposed to be April of 2022 and then November of 2022, but now fans will have to wait some time before the film makes it to cinemas in April of 2023.
