Rogue Squadron: Patty Jenkins-Helmed Star Wars Film Delayed

According to Deadline, Lucasfilm has temporarily removed Patty Jenkins’ forthcoming Star Wars film Rogue Squadron from its 2022 production schedule.

The delay was due to the scheduling conflicts with the acclaimed filmmaker’s other high-profile projects such as Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman 3, and Paramount Pictures’ Cleopatra, which will both be led by Gal Gadot.

The film was initially set to start its pre-production later this year, with the intention to begin shooting next year. Despite the delay, the outlet’s sources noted that Jenkins is still committed to directing Rogue Squadron, and will remain attached to the project.

Rogue Squadron was first announced last December 2020 during Disney’s Investor Day. It is currently for a December 22, 2023, theatrical release, but given the said delay, Lucasfilm might soon set a new release date for the action sci-fi film.

The upcoming Star Wars film will mark the first feature film in the long-running franchise to be led by a female director. Patty Jenkins has been developing the project with Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying). The story is set to introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.

The Star Wars video game series had first made its launch on December 7, 1998, with Rogue Squadron where it was set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It was then followed by three game sequels Rogue Leader, Rebel Strike, and Episode I: Battle for Naboo. However, before the video game had debuted, the X-Wing: Rogue Squadron novel was first published in 1996 which was the first installment in author Michael A. Stackpole’s X-Wing novel series.
