Hwang confirms that he and lead star Lee Jung-jae are indeed coming back for Squid Game Season 2, revealing that he is currently in the planning process for it.

“So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” Hwang said. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Even though it’s still in early development, he went on to tease fans about the second installment’s bigger story and scope involving Lee’s Gi-hun, who was last seen vowing to do everything he can to stop the people behind the games.

“But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this… Gi-Hun will come back, and he’ll do something for the world.”

Squid Game hails from writer-director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, who is best known for his works on South Korean films as The Fortress, Miss Granny, and Silenced. It centers around a group of 456 cash-strapped players who accepted a strange invitation to compete in children’s games at a remote island in hopes of winning 456 billion won. However, they’ll soon find out that the prize comes with deadly high stakes.

The series is led by acclaimed actors Lee Jung-Jae (Along with the Gods), Park Hae-Soo (Prison Playbook), Wi Ha-Joon (Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum), Oh Young-Soo (God of War), Anupam Tripathi (Strangers From Hell), Heo Sung-Tae (Beyond Evil), Kim Joo-Ryoung (Andante), and model Jung Ho-Yeon in her acting TV debut.

The idea for the project has been in development since 2008, with Hwang initially developing it as a film. However, due to its complex story at the time, he had failed to secure investment and casting for it. That’s why he had no choice but to set it aside for ten years.

Currently, Squid Game has now become Netflix’s biggest original series launch of all time. For its first four weeks, it has been watched by a whopping 142 million member households globally.
