Emmy nominee Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Castle Rock) has signed on for the leading role of Alex, the iconic character famously portrayed by acclaimed actress Glenn Close in the 1987 film.

The Fatal Attraction series will be written and executive produced by Dirty John‘s Alexandra Cunningham, who will also be serving as the showrunner. Kevin J. Hynes, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey are set to executive produce.

“Alexandra brings an incredibly strong and nuanced point of view to a story that became a cultural phenomenon, but has thus far only been told from the male gaze,” President of Paramount+ Original Scripted Series, Nicole Clemens said in a statement. “Partnered with Kevin, they will bring the next explosive chapter of this story to a new generation, with a balanced eye to the complexities of the human psyche.”

“A deep-dive reimagining of the classic psychosexual thriller and ’80s cultural touchstone, the new series will explore fatal attraction and the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity, through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders and coercive control,” reads the synopsis. “Caplan stars as a woman who becomes obsessed with her lover after a brief affair.”

The original film was directed by Adrian Lyne and was based on the 1980 short film Diversion. It starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and Anne Archer. The 1987 film wasn’t only a box office success, but also earned critical acclaim with six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Close, and Best Supporting Actress for Archer.
