Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina (Argo, The Sinner, Birds of Prey) have joined the horror film The Boogeyman, 20th Century Studios’ adaptation of the short story written by Stephen King, according to Deadline. “Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her little brother find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late,” reads the film’s logline.

The film adaptation was first announced in 2018, with A Quiet Place scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods attached to the horror film. The project is now being written by Black Swan’s Mark Heyman, based on the original drafts co-written by Beck, Woods, and Akela Cooper. Rob Savage will direct.

Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment (Stranger Things) are producing the project.

First published in the 1973 issue of Cavalier magazine, The Boogeyman begins with a man recalling the recent events of his life to his psychiatrist Dr. Harper after the death of his children, killed by a creature lurking in the closet. The short story was later released in 1978 as part of King’s Night Shift collection.
