The Woman King Photos: First Look at Viola Davis as General Nanisca
In celebration of Black History Month, Oscar winner Viola Davis took to Twitter to share the first two official photos from TriStar Pictures’ upcoming historical epic drama The Woman King. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters this fall on September 16.
The Woman King photos, which you can check out below, feature a very fierce and determined Davis as she portrays the badass warrior Nanisca, the General of an all-female military unit.
Based on real-life events in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), the General of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi, who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
Joining Davis are Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Sheila Atim, and more.
The Woman King is directed by The Old Guard filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay she co-wrote with Dana Stevens. It is being produced by Welle Entertainment’s Cathy Schulman with Davis and Julius Tennon and their JuVee Productions. Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions is producing as well. Hannah Minghella and Nicole Brown will oversee for TriStar Pictures.
