While Paramount has not officially renewed the Halo television series for a second season, the series has found a showrunner for its future.

According to a recent report from Variety, David Wiener (Brave New World) is in talks to take over as the showrunner for the Halo series. The news comes courtesy of executive producer Justin Falvey, who confirmed that Wiener was in discussion during a recent TCA panel for the highly anticipated television series.

While the series may have found a future showrunner, the status of the series is still mostly up in the air. Paramount has yet to officially renew the Halo series for a second season, and a representative for the company said that Wiener is “one of multiple candidates” in the running for the showrunner position.

Should Wiener get the position, he would be replacing Steven Kane, who joined the series in March 2019 and developed the series with Kyle Killen, the original showrunner who signed on to the series in 2018 when Halo was still at Showtime. Since then, both Killen and Kane have stepped away from the series, with Killen leaving prior to its production, and Kane deciding to step away following the completion of Season 1.

The live-action Halo series will be led by Pablo Schreiber (American Gods) as Master Chief, the iconic Spartan super soldier and humanity’s last hope against the alien Covenant; Natascha McElhone (Californication) as Dr. Halsey, the brilliant, conflicted, and inscrutable creator of the Spartan super-soldiers; and Jen Taylor (Halo game series) as Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race.

“It will take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001 with the launch of Xbox(R)’s first Halo game,” reads the synopsis. “Dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant, Halo the series will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.”

Halo is produced by Showtime in association with Microsoft/343 Industries, along with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television. Executive producers are Steven Kane, Spielberg; Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television; director Otto Bathurst and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture; Kyle Killen and Scott Pennington for Chapter Eleven; and Kiki Wolfkill, Frank O’Connor, and Bonnie Ross for 343 Industries.
