Jackass Forever Dominates the Domestic Box Office, Moonfall Crashes

It was a tale of two box offices this weekend as Paramount’s Jackass Forever racked up an impressive $23.5 million in its first week of release, while Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic Moonfall crashed and burned with just $10 million, according to Deadline.

Comparatively speaking, Jackass‘ opening was far below previous entries in the franchise, namely 2006’s Jackass: Number Two ($29 million), 2010’s Jackass 3D ($50 million), and 2013’s Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa ($32 million), though it played similar to 2002’s Jackass: The Movie ($23 million) — not adjusted for inflation. Cumulatively, the Jackass franchise has accrued a massive $520 million worldwide, with Jackass 3D taking the top worldwide top spot with $171 million.

It’ll be interesting to see how Johnny Knoxville’s latest fares in the coming weeks, particularly since there isn’t much competition to lure younger audiences away. At least until Uncharted releases on Feb. 18. No matter, with a $10 million production budget, Jackass is already in the clear.

The same can’t be said for Roland Emmerich’s $140 million budgeted Moonfall, which has a long way to go if it hopes to generate a profit. In terms of the director’s mostly successful career — during which he directed box office hits such as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow; and box office duds such as 2019’s Midway — Moonfall is certainly on the low end of the spectrum, and marks his lowest opening since 1992’s Universal Soldier (discounting 2011’s low-budget Anonymous).

Lionsgate has to hope the film picks up some sort of traction abroad, but otherwise, Moonfall (ironically) might be the first disaster of 2022.
