Apple TV+ has officially given a series order to the upcoming World War II-era epic thriller drama titled The New Look, centering around the rise of fashion icon Christian Dior and his rivalry against the grand dame Coco Chanel. The New Look will be written, directed, and executive produced by Todd A. Kessler (The Sopranos), which will be inspired by true events. It will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark A. Baker.

“The series will be set against the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris when Coco Chanel’s reign as the world’s most famous fashion designer ends and Christian Dior rises helping return spirit and life to the world with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence that will go on to define generations to come,” reads the synopsis. “It centers on the pivotal moment in the twentieth century when Paris led the world back to life through its fashion icons: Christian Dior (played by Mendelsohn), whose creations dominated world fashion in the decade following World War II. The interwoven saga will include the surprising stories of Dior’s contemporaries and rivals: the grand dame Coco Chanel (played by Binoche), Balmain, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent and more.”

Mendelsohn is best known for his acclaimed performance in Netflix’s thriller drama Bloodline, which earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2016. He is currently in production for Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion series, where he will be reprising his MCU role as Talos.

Binoche’s notable film credits include Three Colours Blue, The English Patient, and Chocolat, with the 1996 drama earning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. This marks her first major TV series after appearing in previous TV movies such as 1991’s Women & Men 2 and 2011’s Mademoiselle Julie.
