Universal Pictures and Syncopy have dropped the first Oppenheimer photo for Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming biographical drama, confirming that production has already begun.

The photo, which you can check out below, offers us our first look at Cillian Murphy in his leading performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the invention of the atomic bomb.

In addition, Variety brings word that Tenet star Kenneth Branagh will be reuniting with Nolan as he officially joins the film’s star-studded cast. For his latest directorial film Belfast, Branagh recently garnered three Oscar nominations including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture.

Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Endgame), Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Benny Safdie (Good Time), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Dylan Arnold (You Season 3), and more.

“The IMAX-shot epic thriller thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it,” reads the logline from the outlet.

Set to debut on July 21, 2023, the film is written and directed by Nolan, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin.

Oppenheimer will be distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures. Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing through their Syncopy banner along with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven. The film is being shot on a combination IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film in multiple locations throughout the U.S. including New Mexico, California, and New Jersey
