Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel Sets Australia Return for Untitled Project's Production

Nearly a year after the theatrical release of Godzilla vs. Kong, it looks like Legendary has already started the pre-production process for the untitled sequel to the latest installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. First reports about the project’s development were revealed last year, but the studio didn’t confirm nor deny its existence.

Now, in a recent press release by Screen Queensland, it has been confirmed that Legendary is moving forward with the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel which will begin its production in Australia later this year. Like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong, the untitled project is expected to shoot in “locations across the Gold Coast and south-east Queensland.”

“We are delighted to welcome producers Legendary Pictures back to Queensland, following the filming of Kong Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong in the state in 2016 and 2019 respectively,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said in a statement. “It’s clear our highly skilled local crew, diverse locations and first-rate facilities were definite draw cards for them to come back again.”

The upcoming fifth installment to the blockbuster franchise will be delivering a $79.2 million economic boost to Queensland as well as the creation of 505 jobs for local cast and crew and opportunities for 750 extras.

Further details about the project are still kept under wraps, but initial reports last year suggested that it would potentially be titled Son of Kong. It’s unclear if Adam Wingard would be returning as its director or not. The project will once again be produced by Eric McLeod.

“The highly skilled crews, first-rate facilities, and unique locations make filming in Australia a great experience,” McLeod said. “The support from both the federal government as well as Queensland has always been critical to our success in achieving a high level of filmmaking and an unparalleled audience experience.”

The 2021 film was directed by Wingard from a screenplay written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein. It starred Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and more. Despite its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max debut, it still went on to earn a gross of more than $460 million at the worldwide box office.
