The two series will reportedly be set in the same world of the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and the 2011 film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which starred Downey Jr. as the legendary detective and saw Jude Law play Dr. John Watson, the longtime companion to Holmes. According to the report, the two shows would each focus on a new character that will be introduced in the third Sherlock Holmes film.

The report notes that Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, will executive produce the project, with Amanda Burrell of Team Downey also attached as a producer. This isn’t the first time that the spin-off series for the Sherlock Holmes films have been discussed, but does mark the first time that major steps are being taken to develop them.

A third Sherlock Holmes film has been in the works for more than 10 years, with the film originally set to be released on December 22, 2021. However, the film was delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Both Downey Jr. and Law are set to return for the third film when it’s ready for release.
