The Deer King Comes to Theaters This July

GKIDS has announced that it will be bringing the anime film The Deer King to select theaters across the United States this July.

As part of a partnership between GKIDS and Fathom Events, there will be special fan preview events on July 13 (English subbed) and 14 (English dubbed). These special events will not only feature the film, but a special introduction from Director Masashi Ando as well. Masashi Ando is known for working on landmark anime films like Spirited Away, Paprika, and Your Name. This film marks his directorial debut.

Other than the preview events, The Deer King will have a limited theatrical release starting on Friday, July 15. Tickets can be purchased on the Fathom Events website and the official Deer King website. A short trailer, which you can watch below, was also released to announce the movie’s arrival in theaters.

“In the aftermath of a brutal war, former soldier Van toils in a mine controlled by the ruling empire,” reads the official synopsis. “One day, his solitary existence is upended when a pack of wild dogs carrying a deadly and incurable disease attack, leaving only Van and a young girl named Yuna as survivors. Finally free, the pair seek out a simple existence in the countryside but are pursued by nefarious forces. Intent on protecting Yuna at all costs, Van must uncover the true cause of the plague ravaging the kingdom—and its possible cure.”
