American Born Chinese: Stephanie Hsu Reunites With Michelle Yeoh in Disney+ Series

According to Variety, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Stephanie Hsu has signed on for a guest-starring role in Disney+’s American Born Chinese series. Hsu is set to portray the role of Shiji Niangniang, described as the Goddess of Stones who works in a modern-day jewelry shop along with her magical dog.

This adaptation will officially reunite her with Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, after recently starring together in the acclaimed A24 film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Hsu will next be seen in Rian Johnson’s forthcoming Peacock series Poker Face.

“It tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life,” reads the synopsis. “When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.”

Disney+’s American Born Chinese is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by brothers Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) and Charles Yu (Westworld), with Kelvin Yu also set as the showrunner. It is being described as a genre-hopping action-comedy that is set to explore issues of identity, culture, and family.

The series will star Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi) as Guanyin, Ben Wang (MacGyver) as Jin Wang, Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season) as Christine Wang, Chin Han (Mortal Kombat) as Simon Wang, Daniel Wu (Reminiscence) as Sun Wukong, Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies) as Freddy Wong, former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu as Wei-Chen and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic) as Amelia.

American Born Chinese will be executive produced by Cretton, the Yu Brothers, Gene Luen Yang, Erin O’Malley, Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, and Asher Goldstein. The series is a production by 20th Television.
