Disney+'s Percy Jackson Begins Filming, Adds Five New Cast Members

More than two years after the project was officially announced, production on Disney+’s highly-anticipated TV adaptation of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians novel series has finally begun in Vancouver.

Additionally, Variety brings word that Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Jason Mantzoukas, Virginia Kull (Big Little Lies), Glynn Turman (Fargo), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), and Timm Sharp (Briarpatch) have been tapped for recurring guest-starring roles in the upcoming fantasy series.

“The live-action series tells the fantastical story of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus,” reads the synopsis.

The five new cast members will be joining the previously announced leading cast of Walker Scobell (The Adam Project) as the titular demi-god, Leah Sava Jeffries (Empire) as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri (Disney’s Spin) as Grover Underwood.

Their official character descriptions are listed below:

• Mantzoukas’ Dionysus, a.k.a. Mr. D – The irritable and sarcastic Mr. D runs Camp Half Blood, a camp for the demigods.

• Kull’s Sally Jackson – Percy’s loving, protective and selfless mother. Sally raised her son knowing that one day she’ll have to give him up to the dangerous world of the Olympian gods.

• Turman’s Chiron, a.k.a Mr. Brunner – Disguised as Percy’s Latin teacher Mr. Brunner, Chiron is the famed centaur and trainer of heroes who provides Percy with moral guidance when needed.

• Mullally’s Alecto, a.k.a. Mrs. Dodds – Mrs. Dodds is Percy’s strict, irascible math teacher who may act monstrous at times, because she is. She’s one of the three Furies, known as Alecto, who loyally serves Hades, the god of the underworld.

• Sharp’s Gabe Ugliano – Sally’s selfish, brash, and combative husband as well as Percy’s stepfather.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series will be directed by James Bobin from a screenplay co-written by Riordan and Jon Steinberg (The Old Man), based on Riordan’s first installment of his hit Camp Half-Blood Chronicles book series.

Executive producers are Riordan, Bobin, Steinberg, Dan Shotz, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, and Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg. 20th Television is set as the studio.
