Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to Set Permanent Changes to the MCU

During the recent Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige confirmed that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will officially mark the start of Phase 5. Now, in an interview with Access, director Peyton Reed has opened up about the upcoming threequel’s significant place in The Multiverse Saga, teasing that the Paul Rudd-led film will be bringing permanent changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Kicking off Phase 5 is really exciting for us, because we’re the Ant-Man movies. It’s our third movie. It’s this trilogy now,” Reed said. “But things happen in this movie that are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently. And it’s fun for us that Scott Lang is at the center of that change.”

It was revealed last Saturday that fan-favorite Marvel villains Kang the Conqueror and M.O.D.O.K will be making their live-action debuts in Quantumania. This automatically levels up the stakes for the film, as the beloved titular heroes must face their biggest enemies yet.

In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly will once again share top billing as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Hope van Dyne/Wasp, respectively. They were both last seen by fans during Avengers: Endgame. The film will also feature the return of Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer as they reprise their roles as Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. It’s still unclear if Michael Peña’s fan-favorite Luis and David Dastmalchian’s Kurt would also be back for the sequel as well.

The third installment will also introduce MCU newcomer Kathryn Newton (The Society, Freaky) as she now takes over the role of Cassie Lang, a character previously portrayed by Abby Ryder Fortson in the first Ant-Man films and Emma Fuhrmann in Endgame. Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors have also been cast as Marvel villain Kang the Conqueror, while Ghostbusters star Bill Murray is also expected to appear for an undisclosed role.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is once again being directed by Peyton Reed from a screenplay written by Jeff Loveness, who is best known for writing the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty episode titled “The Vat of Acid Episode.”

The action-comedy will release on February 17, 2023.
