The Black Phone 2: Scott Derrickson Says Potential Sequel is Being Discussed

Following the successful theatrical release of The Black Phone, director Scott Derrickson confirmed that “a lot of conversation” is taking place regarding the potential sequel to the supernatural horror film.

Besides receiving great reviews, the Ethan Hawke-led film proved to be a box office hit for both Blumhouse and Universal Pictures as it earned a worldwide gross of over $150 million at the box office against a reported $16-18 million budget.

“There’s already a lot of conversation, a lot of pressure being put on it,” Derrickson said during his interview with Comic Book. “I mean, the movie cost $18 million, and it’s going to ultimately make probably $160-170 million worldwide. So they want another one. Of course, they do.”

The Black Phone stars Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke along with up-and-coming young actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. Joining them are James Ransone, Jeremy Davies, Brady Hepner, Jacob Moran, and Jordan Isaiah White. It reunites Derrickson and Cargill with Ethan Hawke and James Ransone, who all worked together on 2012’s Sinister.

“The film tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement,” reads the official synopsis. “When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”

It is directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay that he co-wrote with long-time collaborator C. Robert Cargill, based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts.

The Black Phone is being produced by Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum, with Hill serving as an executive producer. It is a co-production between Blumhouse and Crooked Highway Productions.
