Roulette Movie Scenes of All Time

Roulette, for many, is the gambling game that defined what a casino was back in the days of Montecarlo, where it all started. Even more so than Blackjack, which tends to be popular with savvy casino players, or slots which are all-time favorites of the not-so-savvy. Poker gained popularity in the  20th century and made a grand debut online in the early 2000s; Roulette remains the casino icon of all time.

Roulette was invented in 18th century France and was not intended as a gambling device. It was supposed to be a machine of science, the first-ever device of  perpetual movement, meaning the ball dropped into the oval moving cylinder would never stop moving thanks to the constant spin of the cylinder that provided energy. But that experiment didn’t work out; instead, Francois and Lois Blanc added the zero to the numbering scheme on the cylinder and presented it as a gambling game to the rising casino in Monaco. French roulette was born, and soon after, the game traveled overseas to the United States, where American Roulette was introduced.

There are three main versions, French, European, and American Roulette. The number of zeros and slight modifications to the roulette rules allow canceling your bet when the ball falls to zero. To make things short, American roulette adds more zeros and rescinds the favorable rules of staking out half your bet when the ball falls into a zero, which is very disadvantageous. French roulette is the original version and the best to play.

Now let's review the best movie scenes that involve some big roulette plays.

Diamonds Are Forever Of course, a James Bond movie would be the first. If he ever retires, Bond will blow retirement playing poker and casino games; he is just highly skilled and gets the best cards possible in every high-stakes hand.

In the 1962 movie Dr. No, he plays a game of chemin de fer. In one of the most recent Casino Royal he plays baccarat, which according to Bond lore, is his favorite casino game, while in the sequel, he beats ruthless bad bosses at a game of Poker Holdem.

Bond rolls his roulette luck in the 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever. Sean Connery played James Bond and found himself in several tense scenes at the White House Mansion Casino, rolling several times the roulette wheel and staking a considerable amount of money.

Casablanca

An extraordinary film from the noir era in Hollywood, Casablanca tells the tale of Rick, a casino owner in 1942 that wants to help people escape Nazi Germany, Casablanca during World War II. As part of his plans, he rigs a roulette game to control the numbers and tells a newlywed couple to bet on the number 22 big time. They win easily, gain enough money to pay for travel visas, and escape the territory.

Run Lola Run

Run Lola Run is a film from 1998, one of Germany’s best. As the name implies, Lola runs almost all of the movie to pay her boyfriend’s debts to unsavory characters that have threatened to kill him. After a not-so-lucky day trying to bring together the money, Lola finally tries her luck at the casino by betting all of her money on number 22 (a nudge to Casablanca?) on the roulette table.

Indecent Proposal

In this movie, roulette is not the savior but the bringer of bad omens. A couple played out by Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson pays a visit to Vegas with the idea of doing something crazy and bringing home big cash. They bet all their life savings on Red at the roulette table and do not win. Not recovering from their initial shock, a billionaire comes up to them and makes an indecent proposal. He wants to sleep with the couple’s wife in exchange for 1 million dollars. While the proposals seem apparent giveaway, and they take it, this event presents many challenges for their relationship—a great movie with Robert Redford as the billionaire.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

A con movie about two french men in the French Riviera in the late 19th’s who make their fortunes scamming casino games and their incautious visitors. One of the best scenes happens in a swanky casino when both men challenge each other to play roulette to impress the onlookers, which are always beautiful sexy women.

There are a few more movies with great roulette action. The game is one of the most fun to play, without saying easy, and you can pay out many times your initial bet by just betting on a number. Sitting around the table with friends, a cold drink, and even some food is excellent.
