Cathy Yan to Direct Live-Action Paprika Series for Amazon

Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey, Dead Pigs) is set to executive produce and direct the upcoming Amazon live-action series Paprika, according to a recent report from Deadline.

Joining Yan on the series will be Ash Sarohia, her producing partner that will also serve as executive producer, as well as Masai Oka and Jason F. Brown, all of whom will also join as producers for the series.

Based on the Yasutaka Tsutsui novel of the same name, Paprika is a character-driven sci-fi series that centers around a device that allows people to invade others’ dreams. The story then follows a battle between a “dream terrorist” that has been invading people’s dreams and a research psychologist who enters the dream world and becomes Paprika, a dream detective who looks to unravel the mystery behind the attacks on dreams and more.

For Yan, this will continue her rise in Hollywood following the massive success of 2020’s Birds of Prey. Following directing that film, Yan would then go on to direct “The Disruption” episode of the hit HBO series Succession for its third season, which recently saw her garner an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
