Crystal Lake: Friday the 13th Prequel Series Announced

Peacock has announced that the streaming platform is developing Crystal Lake, a prequel show to the Friday the 13th series of slasher films.

The prequel series is set to be helmed by Bryan Fuller, who’s best known for developing and writing Hannibal, American Gods, and Star Trek: Discovery. It will be produced by A24, which has also produced a wide variety of horror films, including the recent hits Men, X, and Pearl. The show is being compared to Bates Motel, A&E’s popular Psycho prequel series.

“I discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old, and I have been thinking about this story ever since,” Fuller stated following the announcement. “When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the envelope, and I’m thrilled to be exploring the campgrounds of Crystal Lake under their banner. And [NBCUniversal’s] Susan Rovner is simply the best at what she does. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be working with her again.”

The Friday the 13th series has been part of a years-long legal battle for quite some time now, with the last Friday the 13th film being released in 2009. The original film’s screenwriter, Victor Miller, won the rights to the first movie’s script and characters but not the title itself or the iconic look of the hockey mask-wearing slasher (as the hockey mask first appeared in the third film). Miller, Marc Toberoff, and Rob Barsamian are set to serve as executive producers on the series.
