The Sandman Season 2 Ordered, Neil Gaiman Issues Statement

Netflix has officially renewed Neil Gaiman’s live-action fantasy drama The Sandman for a second season. The renewal comes nearly three months after the Tom Sturridge-led series debuted its first eleven episodes.

“Millions upon millions of people have welcomed and watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to people who were simply curious, and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family, and their goings-on,” Gaiman said in a statement (via Tudum). “It gives me unbelievable pleasure to say that, working with Netflix and Warner Bros., Allan Heinberg, David Goyer, and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life.”

Gaiman also went on to tease the stories that fans should expect to see in the next installment, including meeting more of Dream’s other siblings, as well as the continuation of his feud with Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer. The new season will continue to expand the world of The Sandman as it returns with even more episodes and stories to be adapted from multiple The Sandman graphic novels.

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter) as Dream, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) as Lucienne, Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve, Cruella) as Death, Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille) as Matthew the Raven, Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as Johanna Constantine, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, and Sandra James Young as Unity Kincaid.

The live-action series is written by Gaiman (American Gods) and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy), who is set as showrunner. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Foundation) is executive producing the drama from Warner Bros. Television.

Sandman, which launched DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, ran for 75 issues beginning in 1989. Gaiman’s worlds-within-worlds weaved an episodic anthology, focusing on the allegorical character of Dream and his brothers and sisters, known as the Endless (Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction, and Destiny).
