The 1969 film Easy Rider is set for a reimagining, with Variety reporting that a reboot of the iconic film is currently in the works.
According to the report, the producers behind the reboot are currently looking for “bold writers and/or directors” to update the project, with the producers looking to address modern times in the same way that the original Easy Rider did upon release. The report mentions that filmmakers used the connection between the Creed films and the world of Rocky as a comparison for how they are looking to handle the reboot.
The original film starred Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Luke Askew, and more, and is seen as one of the films that helped spark the New Hollywood era of filmmaking in the early 1970s. Best known for its counterculture themes, Easy Rider explored the societal landscape, issues, and tensions surrounding adolescents in the United States in the 1960s, including the rise of the hippie movement, drug use, and more.
Following its release, the film quickly became a smash hit, earning $60 million worldwide against a budget of only $400,000. The film was later nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson) at the Academy Awards. In 1998, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, designated as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
