Eileen Release Date Set for Anne Hathaway Thriller Movie

NEON has officially announced the release for upcoming period thriller Eileen. The drama stars Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Last Night in Soho’s Thomasin McKenzie. After its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the film is slated to arrive in select theaters on December 1, followed by a wide release on December 8.

Eileen’s theatrical release will see the film debuting in the same month as several other high-profile movies. These include Warner Bros.’ Wonka, Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and The Color Purple.

What is Eileen about?

“The film follows a peculiar young woman whose dreary life stretches on toward unending misery,” reads the synopsis (via Sundance). “In frigid 1960s Boston, Eileen shuffles between her father’s dingy, emotionally haunted home, and the prison where she works alongside colleagues who have ostracized her. When an intoxicating woman joins the prison staff, Eileen is taken. Just when the possibility of a salvational friendship (or maybe more) takes hold and forms a singular glimmer in Eileen’s darkness, her newfound confidant entangles her in a shocking crime that alters all.”

Eileen is directed by William Oldroyd from a screenplay written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel. It’s based on Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name. The film stars Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Shea Whigham (True Detective), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), and Owen Teague (The Stand).

The film is produced by Goebel, Oldroyd, Moshfegh, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, and Peter Cron. Executive producers are Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Julia Oh, Gregory Zuk, and Jamin O’Brien.
