Alan Arkin Passes Away, Little Miss Sunshine Actor was 89

Alan Arkin, the award-winning actor who appeared in movies like Little Miss Sunshine and Argo, has passed away at age 89.

The actor was famous for many roles in his career that began in the 1950s. He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the foul-mouthed grandfather Edwin Hoover in the 2006 tragicomedy road film, Little Miss Sunshine. Arkin also appeared in films like Edward Scissorhands, Argo, Gattaca, The Muppets, and Marley & Me.

His sons, Adam, Matthew and Anthony, issued a statement on their father’s death. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” they said. “A loving husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”

Arkin’s career spans decades, first receiving a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his 1966 comedy movie The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. Soon after, he played a deaf mute in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, which earned him yet another Oscar nomination. He ventured into directing with the 1971 film Little Murders.

His career continued with many successful films. After his Oscar win for Little Miss Sunshine, he was nominated again a few years later for his role as Lester Siegel in Argo. He recently starred in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method across Michael Douglas, with his final film role being the voice of Wild Knuckles in the 2022 film Minions: The Rise of Gru.
