Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa Struggled With the Show’s Creative Direction

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa has opened up about his struggles with the Netflix show’s creative direction. Speaking to Rolling Stone U ahead of Season 4’s premiere on September 21, Gatwa said: “It was very hard; it was such a big show. When you’re telling stories that haven’t been seen before, there’s always a battle as to how to tell them.”

Gatwa says that saying goodbye to Sex Education, which will end with Season 4, was bittersweet and adds that he was grateful for the experience. But he admits that “it wasn’t always joyous. I feel like we’ve outgrown it and we’ve given everything we can to it.”

Gatwa, who has been cast as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, also talked about how Sex Education offered him a rude awakening about the realities of working in TV: “Being on it fast-tracked me into the downsides of this industry. I remember being told by an executive producer that white people wouldn’t understand my character, Eric, which incensed me. There’s an entire show there for white people to understand.”

What’s Coming in Sex Education Season 4?

“Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College,” reads the official synopsis. “Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A-Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus…”

Along with Gatwa, the Sex Education season 4 cast includes Asa Butterfield, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro, Jim Howick, Rakhee Thakrar, Daniel Ings, and Gillian Anderson.
